MPA Political Action Committee (PAC)

MPA PAC is the political action committee (PAC) of the Maryland Psychological Association (MPA). This mission of the MPA PAC is to preserve the value of your license and protect your livelihood. MPA PAC works at the state level, contributing to candidates for the Maryland General Assembly (and some statewide offices) that have been supportive of mental health issues and psychology. It is not affiliated with any political party or other political committee; contributions are made regardless of party affiliation.

The MPA PAC enables us to make financial contributions to legislators’ campaigns and participate in legislative activities. Attending these legislative events and activities offers greater access to legislators and enhances our ability to form relationships with Maryland’s elected officials. These relationships are critical as we seek to protect psychologists and the populations they serve. This means the MPA PAC must have the financial resources to continue to maintain connections with those we already know and to establish relationships with those we still need to meet.

Sending MPA members to the legislators' fundraisers with tickets purchased with MPA PAC funds encourages legislators to recognize psychologists as players in the political arena. Larger contributions from the PAC during election years help the re-election of legislators who have shown themselves to be willing to champion our issues. These activities are very important to our strength in the General Assembly.

Here are a couple of examples of how MPA PAC has worked for you:

  • Through lobbying, grassroots advocacy and MPA PAC support, Maryland became a PSYPACT state in 2021. You can read more about our PSYPACT advocacy efforts here. Because of our fundraising efforts during our PSYPACT celebration, we raised over $5,000 for MPA PAC!
  • Following years of fighting against and successfully defeating legislation that put mental health professionals in Maryland at risk of criminal conviction for "failure to report child abuse and neglect," MPA's relationships with legislators paid dividends; there was finally legislation put forth regarding failure to report child abuse and neglect, which was balanced enough that MPA was able to voice support. Moreover, during this legislative session, MPA's legislative committee monitored eight proposed bills related to child abuse and neglect reporting, and due to our relationships in Annapolis, was able to have an influence on the outcome of these bills.

Please make the decision to support these efforts and donate to the MPA PAC as it continues supporting and advocating on behalf of all psychologists practicing in Maryland.
