The Secret Life of Money in Private Practice and Beyond

Brad Sachs, Ph.D.
September 18th, 2019

12:00 PM - 1:30 PM Online via Zoom

This presentation will explore the interface between clinical work and the psychological meaning of money, pivoting back and forth between the experiences of both therapist and patient.

It will examine how fiscal currency can serve as a kaleidoscopic representation of numerous aspects of human identity and relatedness, such as security, significance, power, success, affection, control, love and independence, and how crucial it is for clinicians to understand the role that money plays not only in their patients’ lives but also in their own personal, family and work lives as they build their practice and deepen their professional identity.

Topics that will be covered will include:

  • Specific practice-related issues oriented around money, including fee-setting and money-management;
  • Strategies for expanding conversations with patients regarding their financial history, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors;
  • Strategies for expanding therapists’ self-awareness when it comes to their financial history, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors;
  • Exploring class, gender, race and ethnicity perspectives when it comes to addressing financial matters in treatment
