An introduction to a specialty practice in psychology and the board certification process through the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).

• Discuss the increasing role of specialization in psychology

 David R. Cox, PhD, ABPP is Executive Officer of the American Board of Professional Psychology. He is ABPP board certified in Rehabilitation Psychology and was a founding member of the American Board of Rehabilitation Psychology. Dr. Cox has served on the staff and faculty of U.C. San Diego, Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Florida. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association Divisions 22, 31, 40, and 42; he is also a Fellow of the National Academy of Neuropsychology. He is a recipient of the APA Heiser Award and a Lifetime Practice Excellence Award from APA Division 22. He is a past president of the Florida Psychological Association (FPA) and recipient of the FPA Distinguished Practitioner Award, Distinguished Service Award, and Legislative Affairs & Public Policy Board Chapter Representative of the Year. He served on the APA Taxonomy Work Group, the Association of State & Provincial Psychology Boards’ workgroup on maintenance of competence and licensure, and innumerable ABPP committees. His clinical work has focused on rehabilitation of brain injury and other disabilities. He has helped establish community re-entry programs for persons with brain injury and established the Neuropsychology Department (now Medical Psychology Department) of Florida Hospital. He worked with the Department Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, and Defense Health Board developing guidance for the care of returning warriors with brain injury and PTSD. He served as the lead consultant to IBM in development of one of the first cognitive rehabilitation computer programs, the IBM THINKable System ®. Dr. Cox has widely presented and published in the areas of rehabilitation, neuropsychology and competency in professional psychology. Trivia - he enjoys music and has recently begun sharpening his songwriting talents as a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
