Ethics Complaints – How To Help Your Attorney Avoid A Complaint And What To Do If Your Attorney Has To Respond To A Complaint

Description: The time, energy, and frustration associated with receiving an ethics complaint can be enormously costly to an attorney. This presentation will focus on strategies to document and organize details for each and every family law file so that if your attorney does receive a complaint, compiling the facts for the investigator will be a less cumbersome task. In addition, we will discuss the ethics complaint process and tips for helping your attorney draft a clear response to the assigned investigator. We may not be able to prevent clients from filing a complaint, but we can help make sure the attorneys we support are adequately prepared to respond when the need arises.

Speaker: Lori Brandon, RP®, MnCP – Metro Law and Mediation.  Lori serves as a volunteer ethics investigator for the 8th District Bar Association, a position she was appointed to in 2015. She has worked in the legal field since 1991, primarily in the area of family law. Her experience includes law firms of varying sizes as well as 6 years as an employee with the Minnesota Judicial Branch. Lori holds a Master’s Degree in Organizational Management, and she is both a PACE Registered Paralegal and a Minnesota Certified Paralegal. In addition to providing paralegal services, she is a Rule 114 Qualified mediator, and she has received training to provide Social Early Neutral Evaluation services to Minnesota family law litigants.
