Sleep and circadian regulation are complex systems impacting all physical and mental function.  This workshop will provide a brief update on the recent advances in sleep and circadian science that are relevant to clinical care that will provide important context for the evaluation and treatment of behavioral sleep problems that are common during the first two decades of life.   A practical approach to assessment, differential diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment strategies will provide attendees with key skills that they can implement in their clinical practice.  The talk will mix cases, didactics, and interactive discussion to facilitate learning about cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia and other evidence-based approaches to treating insomnia and co-morbid sleep disorders (ie., circadian rhythm disorders and parasomnias).

After attending this workshop, attendees will be able to

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic principles of sleep and the circadian mechanism that are relevant to insomnia and related behavioral sleep disorders;
  • Select and interpret measures of sleep and circadian disorders that validated children and adolescents;
  • Describe the primary evidence intervention for the treatment of insomnia and other behavioral sleep problems that are common in children and adolescents.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to assess for various sleep disorders in adults as well as discuss evidence-based, behavioral sleep medicine interventions, including an in-depth review of CBT-I treatment, to address them.  Specific CBT-I strategies discussed will include: use of sleep logs, sleep restriction, stimulus control, sleep hygiene, relaxation, and cognitive therapy. 

After attending this workshop, attendees will be able to:

  • Conduct a thorough sleep assessment, evaluating for insomnia, and other sleep disorders;
  • Identify the components of CBT-I, including: sleep restriction, stimulus control, sleep hygiene, relaxation, and cognitive therapy;
  • Apply the CBT-I components (as described above)
  • Utilize sleep logs to guide treatment.

Virginia Runko, PhD, CBSM, DBSM is a licensed psychologist and founder of DC Psychology and Sleep Services where she specializes in treating sleep disorders.  She is board-certified as a behavioral sleep medicine specialist (BSM) and diplomate.  Within BSM, her specialty is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).  She also provides supportive psychotherapy and conducts CBT for anxiety, depression, relationship and interpersonal difficulty, and adjustment issues in adults, including college students.  In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Runko also provides consultation for clinicians working towards their certification in BSM.
